Welcome to my art pages! I've been on a bit of a sabbatical from my studio, but am incubating some creative ideas.
Here's a recent painting (chalk pastel) I did based on some work from a group of Canadian painters called "The Group of Seven." I am quite drawn to their work...
The Fire Tree
12" x 12"
"Postage Stamp Paintings: Miniature Meditations on the Journey of Life."
Wow, what a wonderful turnout! I just want to thank everyone who took the time swing by my show, it was a treat to spend time with you and celebrate the birth of these 20 paintings.
I must admit that I'm quite proud of this collection, and it felt really good to be seen and received. The paintings are small, but they represent a lot of love, work, and attention. If you're interested in reading my Artist Statement, you can find it by continuing to scroll down.
Each tiny watercolor painting of a landscape with a path or road is complimented with a pithy quote about this wild journey called life. Image and words combine to form a meditative window into the mystery we live and we are.
The finished pieces are in 5x7" or 6x6" format (board dimensions). I hand-built all the frames in hemlock wood (crazy me!). All quotes are hand-written, and the watercolors are painted on archival quality paper. They are mounted on a sustainably-produced maple plywood board manufactured by a hip young company in Portland, and are sealed with UV-protective, archival varnish.
Here is a slide show of the seven of the paintings. The quotes are a bit hard to read so I've typed them out, below the slide show.
ps - the show is SOLD OUT! :-)

"Postage Stamp Paintings: Miniature Meditations on the Journey of Life"
Fleeting moments, poignant memories. An insight flits across the treetops and lands on a branch just long enough for my cells to shimmer ever so slightly. Momentarily spellbound, I am grateful for the gift.
Nothing like a full tank of gas and setting out on a road trip. The horizon of discovery stretches out in a never-ending invitation, while curiosity pulls me around corners like a magnet. As weathered as I am, the truth is that every ordinary day can hold this very same magic.
Road as symbol: emerging territories, startling experiences, unpredictable outcomes slide through this one ever-still moment.
Postage stamps. Small treasures collected from mountain passes, dead ends, empty highways, and back roads.
Little gems and pearls - touchstones from challenging and beautiful moments in my life... the infinite creative unfolding of the story and Being that I am.
Aha moments and vistas allowing glimpses into the Beyond.
Wisdom smoothed into river rocks or crushed like carbon into diamonds. Acres of life condensed into something worth keeping in your pocket or on your finger.
"Writing is like driving at night. You can see only as far as the headlights, but you can make the whole trip that way." E.L. Doctorow
